Why Umbria?
Few regions can stir emotions as intensely as Umbria.
For the visitor, crossing this region – with its varied contours and many moods – is like stepping into a dimension where spiritual aura, artistic heritage and environmental merits mesh perfectly.
Entering the hushed stillness of its rolling countryside and losing yourself in the nuances of its landscapes, which look like they have come straight from a Perugino painting, is like attuning your spirit to the secret rhythm of a worldwhere people and quality of life are indeed key values to be protected.
A land symbolising spirituality, it is also a place farmed for the zest and hearty flavour of its food and wine. Umbria overflows with the overwhelming silence of ist nature reserves, yet it is also a land lulled by the jazz beat of its events and shows. Countless hamlets and towns paint the portrait of this region: each one has its own history, ist own traditions and even its own dialectal inflections.
To a certain extent, Umbria’s specificity is tied to its central geographic position on the Italina peninsula. As a result, the region has long been the crossroads of men and cultures, a place where ideas and experiences have been exchanged.
Within the reiogn, all it takes is a short outing to enjoy a dramatic change in scenery, ranging from Lake Trasimeno to the hardy woodlands of Valnerina, and from the luxuriant basin of Gubbio to the Sibylline Mountains – with their myths and legends – and then down to the rolling hills of Amelia.
Umbria is dotted with small towns, hamlets and castles that are often the theatrical focal point of the countryside. This solid bond between man and enrivronment is one of the most precious assets of Umbrian history, starting with the Etruscans to move on to Roman colonisation, and the notable mediaeval and Renaissance periods. Few other regions can boast such perfect harmony between art and nature, landscape and architecture, city and country.
The splendour of the history and culture of Umbria is not tied solely to its past. It thrives on the important events that attract thousands of visitors and aficionados every year: Umbria Jazz, the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, the Sagra Musicale Umbra and the Festival of Nations.
History and traditions are constantly commemorated through fascinating festivals and games that tive visitors a first-hand glimpse of the way of life of these communities – past and present - with events like the Corsa dei Ceri in Gubbio, the Quintana of Foligno, Assisi’s Calendimaggio, the Corsa all’Anelli in Narni and the Infiorata in Spello. |
