Todi (history)
According to an ancient legend, a long time ago (perhaps 2707 B.C.) Todi was founded by the Veii Umbrii, who explored central Italy and decided to settle in the heart of it on flat land, as it was a strategic place along the River Tiver.
Whilst laying down the first boulders necessary to build the great boundary walls, the legend tells that an eagle came down, reached a group of men having a break and eating roasted meat. It suddenly grasped a huge red cloth from their table, flew up again to the sky and eventually alighted on the top of the hill, leaving the cloth there. Such an event was interpreted as a sign sent from the gods, so the people immediately moved to the selected hill, built the fortress (la rocca) and there founded Todi, whose name derived from their leader called Tudero.
