Spello (the history)

A centre of ancient Umbrian origins, Spello was a colony in the Triumviral-Augustan age. Under the rule of Costantine it became the Flavia Constans colony as testified by the Rescript of Constantine on display in the Town Hall. A Longobard territory of the Duchy of Spoleto it was declared a castrum (or fortified  area) in the Lower Middle Ages. In 1360 the Town Statutes were drawn up. From 1389 to 1583 it was dominated by the Baglioni family of Perugia and was later made part of the Papal State, which it remained a part of until the Unification of Italy. In 1829 it was given the title of city.

Events:

Infiorata del Corpus Domini, a procession of many forms and colours, featuring amazing floral compositions displayed along the streets of the town representing liturgical figures and ornamental motifs

Olive Oil and Bruschetta Festival, held the last weekend in November. A unique parade of olive pickers or tractors decorated with olive branches.
